About Us

Who we are.

Telos Exotics is run by myself (Kimberly Halzen) and my husband, Nathan. We operate out of our home in Omaha, NE. As of 2022 I have been a part of the hedgehog owner community for 15 years - I started in education and rescue while I owned my first hedgehog, and expanded to begin our breeding program in 2012. I have bachelors degrees from OSU in Animal Sciences and Sustainability. Between OSU and K-State I have also studied business and pet food formulation. Nathan's background is in zoology, veterinary medicine, and shelter medicine. He especially loves educating owners so they can understand and appreciate their pets to their fullest.

We launched Hedgehog Precision in 2018 to address significant needs in the community for high quality diets and supplies designed for pet hedgehogs. Hedgehog Precision sales fund our research and development so that we can better care for our pets.

I'm currently working on the third edition of my hedgehog care book! The second edition has been the most widely accepted care book for hedgehogs. This next one will be even better!

What we do.

Telos Exotics is a very small USDA (license in process) facility. We have a climate controlled "hedgehog room" that our hedgies (and some other pets) call home. We offer meet and greets by appointment only at our Hedgehog Precision office space.

Breeding Program

Our breeding program began in 2012. Most of the babies we produce go to loving pet homes, although some go to other breeders and educational facilities. Several of our hedgehogs have gone to the Oregon Zoo and The Living Desert!

Few breeders put the effort into carefully following the health and longevity of their breeding program. We want to know how old our hedgehogs live to be and what health problems they might have, so we can make informed choices for the good of our pets. Family health history is important and there is little benefit to a pedigree if you don't also know health of the animals in that lineage.

Rescue

We have been an official Rescue Station for the Hedgehog Welfare Society since 2009. Some hedgehogs are surrendered to us through the HWS, others come to us directly. We are an open-door hedgehog rescue and will always take in a hedgehog in need. Rescues and rehomes that come to us are provided veterinary care if needed and well cared for while we evaluate their health and temperament. Most will go to carefully screened pet homes to live out their lives, and others find their forever home here with us.

There is no fee to surrender a hedgehog to us. Please reach out over email if you would like us to take your hedgehog in, or know of a hedgehog in need.

Boarding

Do you need a safe, reliable home for your hedgehog while you are away? You bring your hedgehog's wheel and food, and we provide the rest! Your hedgie will borrow a cage in our warm and cozy hedgehog room.

Regular rate: $20 base + $10/night
Medical boarding: $20 base + $15/night for 1x day medical care, $20/night for 2x day medical care.

Since we do not have normal operating hours, you will need to schedule appointments for drop off and pick up with us. Thank you!

Education

Aside from animal care, the bulk of our time is spent counseling new and to-be owners on proper hedgehog care and handling. We work closely with our customers to be sure they have a good grasp on care before taking their hedgehog home, and are always available to answer questions - no matter how small!

We've compiled some care, health, nutrition, etc. resource posts at Hedgehog Precision!

I am currently writing the 3rd edition of my hedgehog care book. This will be the most comprehensive resource for pet hedgehogs available, and I'm excited to share it with the community. I have invested a lot of my time and personal savings into collecting data to include so the contents can be as accurate and relevant as possible.

On occasion we are able to offer educational presentations tailored to your curriculum. Are your students learning about nocturnal animals, or would they like to compare an insectivorous omnivore with carnivores, herbivores or animals with other feeding strategies? We prefer our presentations to be focused on animal biology rather than promoting hedgehogs as pets, since they are not suitable pets for everyone.
